Where an SSD is better

Where an HDD still makes sense
An HDD can offer more capacity for the same budget. It can be useful for a desktop or external archive containing large videos and files that do not need constant fast access.
Check compatibility before buying
- Does the laptop accept a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 drive or both?
- Does an M.2 slot support SATA, NVMe or the required length?
- Can the storage be replaced, or is it soldered?
- Will the operating system be cloned or freshly installed?
Used drives need extra care
Ask for health information, but do not treat one screenshot as a warranty. Back up important files because every storage device can fail.
A practical combination
Where the laptop supports two drives, a smaller SSD can hold Windows and important apps while a larger drive stores media. An external drive can provide backup, but a backup should not be the only copy.

Choose an SSD for the operating system and everyday laptop use when the budget allows. Choose an HDD mainly for cheaper bulk storage, then keep another copy of anything important.
