We label the type of evaluation
A hands-on review means Tech Embed used or tested the product and can document the conditions. A research-based evaluation uses verified specifications, current pricing, support information, credible user evidence and comparison data. We do not describe a research-based evaluation as hands-on testing.
What a hands-on review records
- How the product was obtained, including a loan, review unit, purchase or event demonstration where relevant.
- The test period, software version, network, accessories and important limits of the test.
- The tasks performed and the evidence used to support conclusions.
- Any commercial relationship, affiliate link or material limitation that readers should know about.
What we assess
The exact criteria depend on the product. Common areas include usability, performance, reliability, battery or power demands, privacy and security, repairability, software support, warranty, local availability and total ownership cost.
Nigeria and Africa context
A product that works well elsewhere may be poor value locally. We check naira pricing, taxes, payment access, network compatibility, power requirements, warranty coverage, repairs, regional restrictions and the availability of official support.
Scores and recommendations
A score summarises the evidence available at the time and is not a permanent or universal verdict. Recommendations explain who a product may suit, who should avoid it and which trade-offs matter. Prices and software behaviour can change, so dated information is reviewed when material changes are confirmed.
Editorial independence and corrections
Brands and advertisers do not approve review conclusions before publication. Factual errors are corrected under the Corrections Policy, and meaningful changes to a product may lead to an update note or a fresh evaluation.
