How to Resolve a Failed or Pending Bank Transfer in Nigeria

Keep the transaction reference, confirm the final status and complain to the sending institution first. Escalate only through official channels if it remains unresolved.

A transaction reference and written complaint trail help the institution trace a failed or pending transfer.

A transfer can show as pending, fail before completion, debit the sender without crediting the beneficiary, or reverse after a delay. Those outcomes look similar at first, but they require the bank to trace the transaction record.

Do not send the money again immediately

First confirm whether the beneficiary received value. Repeating the payment while the first request is unresolved can create a duplicate transfer.

Save the evidence

  • Transaction or session reference
  • Date and exact time
  • Amount
  • Sending and receiving institutions
  • Beneficiary name
  • Status shown in the app
  • Debit alert or receipt

Do not publish full account details or references on social media.

Complain to the sending institution

Use the bank’s official app, website, branch or verified support channel. Explain whether the beneficiary was credited and request a complaint reference. A screenshot sent by another person is not the bank’s final transaction record.

Follow the complaint

Keep dates, replies and reference numbers together. The CBN says customers should complain to their financial institution first. If the institution does not resolve the complaint within the applicable period, the customer can escalate through the CBN Consumer Protection process.

Watch for impersonators

A genuine resolution should not require your PIN, password or one-time code. Do not install remote-access software or send money to a so-called recovery agent.

The bottom line

Confirm the final status, keep the reference and start with the institution that sent the payment. A clear written trail is more useful than repeated calls without a complaint number.

What this means here

For Nigeria

Nigerian customers should preserve the session or transaction reference and use the bank's official complaint process before escalating an unresolved case to the CBN.

Across Africa

Complaint timelines and payment rails differ across countries, but the safe sequence remains: confirm status, avoid duplicate payment, preserve evidence and contact the regulated provider.
