Background Data on Android: What It Means and When to Turn It Off

What background data means

Foreground data is used while an app is visible on the screen. Background data is used when the app is minimized, the screen is off or another app is open. It can support message delivery, email synchronization, cloud backup, location sharing, advertising and content preloading.
