A laptop that still opens your documents can nevertheless need a new security plan. If you use Windows 10 in Nigeria, check your update coverage before deciding that everything is fine, paying someone to “extend support”, or replacing a computer you may still be able to use responsibly.
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025. Its current consumer Extended Security Updates page, checked on 21 September 2026, lists coverage through 12 October 2027 for eligible enrolled devices. That is a limited security-update arrangement, not a return to full product support. Microsoft’s consumer ESU information.
The practical question is therefore not simply whether your laptop runs Windows. It is which support arrangement applies to that particular machine, and what your next workable option is.
Check the computer, not a seller’s promise
Start in Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update. Check the displayed update and enrolment status rather than relying on a desktop sticker or an assurance from a repair shop. Microsoft’s consumer programme has eligibility conditions, and regional enrolment options can differ. A business-managed machine needs its administrator’s advice; consumer arrangements should not be assumed to cover commercial use. Check eligibility and enrolment.
For a Nigerian reader, this means avoiding a naira payment based only on a foreign price quoted in a tutorial. Establish the option actually offered to your account and device. This article does not confirm Nigerian checkout pricing or claim every Nigerian PC is eligible.
If a technician offers to help, ask what they will change, which account will own any entitlement and what evidence you will receive. Keep control of your own sign-in details. An unexplained “lifetime security” charge is not a substitute for a verifiable support arrangement.
Establish whether Windows 11 is a realistic option
Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool can assess upgrade compatibility. Its requirements include a compatible processor, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot-capable firmware; the amount of RAM alone does not establish eligibility. Some applications also need more than the operating system’s minimum specifications. Windows 11 requirements.
Before buying an advertised “Windows 11 laptop”, request the exact model and processor rather than accepting a description such as “Core i5”. Ask for evidence of compatibility and test the programs you depend on where a demonstration is possible.
Our buying advice is to treat the software and the physical machine as separate checks. Support eligibility cannot tell you whether a used laptop’s battery, keyboard, charger or storage is in good condition. Conversely, an attractive screen and healthy battery do not establish a supported operating system.
Plan the change around your work
For a student, the priority might be preserving coursework and access to an examination portal. For a freelancer, it might be keeping an invoicing tool and a client’s project files available. These are examples, not claims about a particular institution or application.
List the software, passwords, recovery methods and files you need before making changes. Keep a separate backup and open a sample of the copied documents to check that they are usable. Tech Embed’s 3-2-1 backup guide explains how to avoid relying on one copy.
If you buy mobile data or have only occasional access to reliable power, plan downloads and installation for a suitable window. Leave time to troubleshoot rather than starting immediately before a deadline. Do not assume that changing the operating system is a five-minute task simply because someone else’s machine updated quickly.
Make a decision you can verify
There are three useful outcomes from this check: confirm an applicable update arrangement, prepare a supported upgrade, or budget for a suitable replacement. A temporary arrangement should have a recorded review date, not become a reason never to revisit the machine.

Before spending, you should be able to answer four questions: What am I running? What updates am I entitled to receive? Will my essential work still function after the change? Where is my verified backup?
Those answers are more valuable than either a panic purchase or an unsupported promise that an old computer is protected indefinitely.
