Two chargers can have the same USB-C port and deliver very different power. The connector shape alone does not prove that a charger can power a laptop.
Check the laptop requirement
Read the original charger label or the manufacturer’s official specification. Look for watts and supported input. Multiplying volts by amps gives watts, but USB Power Delivery uses negotiated profiles, so matching only the largest printed number is not enough.
Choose USB Power Delivery
USB-IF says USB Power Delivery supports higher power over USB-C and can reach up to 240W in supported systems. The laptop and charger still need compatible profiles.
Check the cable
A cable can limit power even when the charger is capable. USB-IF’s current cable marking system distinguishes 60W and 240W USB-C to USB-C cable capability. Use a properly rated cable from a traceable seller.
More watts do not force more power
In a correctly implemented USB Power Delivery system, the device requests a supported level. A higher-capacity charger can be safe, but it may not charge faster than the laptop allows.
Inspect quality and support
- Firm connector fit
- No exposed wiring or unusual heat
- Clear manufacturer and electrical information
- Protection against overcurrent and overheating
- Receipt, return policy and warranty
The bottom line
Match all three parts: the laptop requirement, the charger’s supported USB PD output and the cable’s power capability. Do not buy by connector shape alone.
